Galaxy Tab 10

Galaxy Tab 10.1N gets unboxed, previewed, benchmarked, compared and very nearly reviewed on video

Samsung’s Made for Germany Galaxy Tab 10.1N will soon be hitting the German shelves. But before that we have a video for you of the device getting a thorough rundown in a typical Teutonic fashion.

In the video below by NewGadgets.de, we can see the new Galaxy Tab 10.1N first getting unboxed. After spending some time explaining the new design the video moves on to the software and the performance of the device in gaming and web browsing. From there it moves on to benchmarking and finally end it with a comparison with rival tablets.

As you can see the device looks nearly identical to the regular 10.1. The backside, which we are seeing for the first time, is exactly the same. Same goes for the software and everything else about the device. But Samsung seems confident that this should be enough to keep them out of legal troubles for a while, at least. This also means that Germans who have been waiting to get the device can do so now officially.

Barnes and Noble launches the Android-running NOOKcolor eBook reader

Barnes and Noble launches the Android-running NOOKcolor eBook reader, sells for 249 US dollars

Barnes and Noble has just unveiled its latest eBook reader, the NOOKcolor. It packs a 7-inch color touchscreen, offers Wi-Fi connectivity and runs Android. It’s so much more than a traditional eBook reader.

So, the E-Ink display is now gone, replaced by the 16M-color 1024-by-600-pixel IPS touchscreen with multi-touch support (read “pinch-to-zoom”) and viewing angles reaching the impressive 178 degrees. The NOOKcolor comes with 8GB of onboard storage for up to 6000 eBooks (there are over 2 million compatible eBooks) and there is also a microSD memory card slot ready to accommodate cards with up to 32GB of memory.

The newly announced NOOKcolor can also be used for web browsing (over Wi-Fi – there is no support for 3G) or as a portable media player. It features a built-in mono speaker, a standard 3.5mm audio jack and plays MP3 and AAC audio files as well as videos in MP4 format.

The NOOKcolor also displays files in EPUB, PDF, TXT, DOC, DOCX, XLS, PPT, JPG, formats (keep in mind, though, that LIT, AMZ, LRZ, LRX files are not supported).

The NOOKcolor lets you listen to the Pandora internet radio, play some games (Chess, Sudoku, Crossword Puzzles) and, according to the manufacturer, will stay awake for up to 8 hours (with Wi-Fi switched off) before you have to recharge its battery.

By the way, even if the NOOKcolor is based on the Android platform, it has no access to the Android Market so you have to rely on the B&N’s own app store.

The NOOKcolor is now on pre-order in the US (for 249 US dollars, which is 100 bucks more than the previous Wi-Fi-only model) and will start shipping on 19 November 2010.

The base model can be had for around 450 ($563), but offers a rather lowly 1.4Ghz Celeron processor. If you want some Sandy Bridge magic, you’ll have to fork over 560 (around $700) for the version with a 1.5Ghz Core i3-2377M processor.

All of the B113 variants feature the aforementioned RAM, storage and dispaly, as well as Wi-Fi a/b/g/n, USB 3.0, HDMI and a 4400mAh battery, as well as a special matte coating on the screen designed to reduce glare.

Purported images of iPad 3 shell surface

Purported images of iPad 3 shell surface, said to contain a bigger battery, different display and different cameras

The next generation iPad is nearing its launch and so the rumor mills are now in full force. What we have today, though, is not a rumor but a purported photograph of the aluminum shell of the next generation iPad (which I will refer to as the iPad 3 for now).

What you see above is the aforementioned photograph, with the iPad 3 shell on the right. The photograph was uncovered by RepairLabs, who noticed that the new shell has different mounts for the logic board, which suggests a redesigned logic board, most probably to accommodate a larger battery. They also said that the shell did not look noticeably thicker than the iPad 2′s, which is contrary to current rumors that suggested that the iPad 3 will be slightly thicker.

Next they noticed that the camera seemed a bit different on the iPad 3 compared to the one on the iPad 2. Considering the fact the camera on the iPad 2 was quite lame when it came to still images, it’s likely that Apple would beef it up in the next version. Perhaps we would see auto-focus being included, along with a new back-lit sensor and 1080p video recording.

Lastly, they noticed that the mounting for the LCD is different, which means Apple will be using a different display. This does not necessarily mean that it will be a Retina display, but that does seem to be the most likely explanation.

As usual, we would suggest you take this information with a pinch of salt. It’s not uncommon these days to find images tuned expertly in a way that they would align perfectly with the currently circulating rumors, thus making the viewer believe that they might in fact be real. However, it doesn’t seem like it will be long before we find out what the iPad 3 really is like. That is assuming Apple sticks with its March schedule for announcing new iPads.

The HTC EVO 4G better show us some GSM love

The HTC EVO 4G better show us some GSM love

The HTC EVO 4G (a.k.a. Supersonic) is one uber-smartphone. Slim, sleek, powerful and smart. It’s only that it works over CDMA networks only and we don’t have much of those here in Europe. Instead we stick to GSM networks and that’s one of the reasons our primary website is called GSMarena.com. The “Arena” thing was chosen with the old gladiator arenas in mind. We like to think that our website is where various GSM phones meet and clash in a battle for your attention. But I digress…

The thing is – we get a lot of emails from you guys about the HTC EVO 4G. No, we’re not neglecting it on purpose. We certainly don’t have anything against HTC or Android – a quick look over at our homepage will prove that. It’s just that we don’t cover CDMA-only handsets. Simple as that. There’s no covert ploy here and we’re not blind and deaf. We know all about the EVO 4G and we certainly hope HTC will make one for our type of network.

But until then – this post will remain our only scoop the EVO 4G will get from us.

The EVO 4G (or may be you know it as the HTC Supersonic) is like a geek’s dream come true. It packs the zippy 1GHz Snapdragon CPU, a huge 4.3″ capacitive touchscreen, and runs the Android OS v2.1 Eclair with the latest Sense UI on top of it.

The HTC EVO 4G is also the first US phone to feature WiMAX support. It also comes with support for Wi-Fi, stereo Bluetooth and has a secondary camera for videocalls (not many Androids have one). The primary camera sports autofocus, dual LED flash and is capable of taking 8-megapxel images and 720p videos.

And guess what! The EVO 4G has an HDMI port too. And a kickstand! Whew, that boy surely packs some serious gear. But again – until we see some GSM love, it will remain off our homepage and off our database. That’s the way we run things around here – sorry!

HTC apologizes for all delayed HTC One orders with $25 Google Play credit

HTC apologizes for all delayed HTC One orders with $25 Google Play credit

HTC might be having some trouble lately, but that doesn’t stop it from caring for the early HTC One adopters. The first batch of the flagship suffered delays due to some production shortages, which were recently overcome.

If your HTC One order was delayed because of those production hiccups but you didn’t give up on the One, HTC will soon reward your patience with a $25 Google Play voucher.

Here is the official statement from HTC’s email:

“We realize that your shipment was unexpectedly delayed, but we hope that your new HTC One has been worth the wait! Thanks for your patience and understanding. We appreciate your loyalty to HTC, and as a gesture of our thanks, we would like to give you a complimentary $25 Google Gift Credit.”

The following email was sent from HTC Shop America, so it’s unclear if other regions will get the same kind treatment.

New Max Payne 3 trailer is out

New Max Payne 3 trailer is out, reveals the game's storyline

Rockstar has launched the second official Max Payne 3 trailer, which reveals a bit more about the storyline in the game. Until now the game studio only revealed a bit of the gameplay of the action title.

If you remember, in the first two parts of Max Payne, he was looking for the people who murdered his family, and he finally had his sweet revenge. Now, the story is quite different, but it could still prove very interesting.

Here’s the story in short in Rockstar’s words:

The second official trailer for Max Payne 3 reveals the web of intrigue that builds around Max, beginning with the kidnapping of Rodrigo Branco’s beautiful young wife, Fabiana, while under Max’s protection. As Max fights to uncover the truth behind the kidnapping, he is pulled deeper into a web of violence and deception with little hope of escape as street gangs, paramilitary forces and elite police units fight for power and influence over the streets of S?o Paulo, Brazil.

Sounds intriguing to me. And, knowing the Rockstar Studio usual practices, the game will be a joy to play too. Max Payne is currently available for pre-order and is expected to hit your PC or console of choice on May 15.

Updated Nokia Maps v3

Updated Nokia Maps v3.08 finds a new home on your Symbian homescreen

Nokia Maps v3.08 is now available for download to Symbian Anna and Belle users and is bringing along some goodies you might want to check out.

First off, Nokia Maps now offers four homescreen widgets, also live traffic services, weather service, improved Drive navigation and more. Nokia Maps already offers lifetime free-of-charge voice-guided navigation across 100 countries with downloadable maps and everything.

Nokia Maps widgets number four in total – Maps, Drive, Check in and Guides. The latter act like Foursquare and Local scout and were pretty nifty Maps features in the first place. Now you have access to them straight from the homescreen.

Live traffic rerouting is available now and will try to save you some time by resetting your calculated route to avoid congestion. Check out the source link for the full details on the update.

The update is available through the online Nokia Store or (for Anna users) Nokia Suite or the Software Update application on the device itself. Here’s a quick link for the browser version of Nokia Store.

Google to announce a music streaming service at I/O 2013

Google to announce a music streaming service at I/O 2013

It seems Spotify is going to have some tough competition soon. According to The Verge, Google is all set to unveil its own music streaming service today at the Google I/O event.

According to their sources, Google has already signed deals with two of the biggest music labels in the industry, Universal Music Group and Sony Music Entertainment. Google had also reportedly struck a deal with Warner Music Group earlier this year. This means that they have sizable content to kick off the service.

The service will of course be subscription based and will be available separately for YouTube and Google Play, although the YouTube service will reportedly be audio-only, according to The Wall Street Journal. The New York Times is also reporting that Google won’t be offering any free tier for the service and all options would be paid.

We have been hearing for a while now that Apple will be launching its own music streaming service but with today’s launch Google should get a decent head start. Although, it is being said that Apple would have a streaming radio service such as Pandora rather than an on-demand service like Spotify or Google’s offering.

Galaxy Tab 10

Galaxy Tab 10.1 ban gets lifted

After keeping it in purgatory for a while, Judge Lucy Koh has finally lifted the ban on the Galaxy Tab 10.1. If you remember, the tablet was banned in the US court after it was found that the device was infringing upon the iPad’s design.

Later on, however, during the recent Apple vs. Samsung legal war, the jury decided that although the Galaxy Tab 10.1 was infringing upon several of Apple’s patents, the design patent wasn’t one of them. And since the ban was due to that particular patent, it would have to be lifted.

After that Samsung appealed for the ban to be lifted, which meant Judge Lucy Koh could not lift the ban any longer as it was out of her jurisdiction (she could have if Samsung had not appealed). Then the Federal U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals sent the case back to Koh and authorized her to lift the ban and so the ban has now been lifted.

Now, the Galaxy Tab 10.1 is not completely out of the woods. The next round of Apple vs. Samsung trials will commence on December 6 and the Galaxy Tab 10.1 is part of it and as mentioned before, it still infringes upon several of Apple’s patents so it could once again be banned. But till then you still have around two months where the product can now be sold legally in the US. Assuming anybody would still want to buy it.

Amazon upgrades Kindle Fire

Amazon upgrades Kindle Fire, presents a brand-new Kindle Fire HD lineup with 7.0, 8.9 and 8.9 4G LTE tablets

Amazon didn’t forget the Kindle Fire tablets, either. The old Kindle Fire gets a hardware upgrade – the processor has been updated to run at 1.2GHz, the RAM has been doubled to 1GB and the battery life has been improved. With the new parts the Kindle Fire is now 40% faster. It costs $159 and will hit the shelves on September 14.

Amazon also announced the new Kindle Fire HD. It’s a powerful tablet with a 7.0 or 8.9-inch IPS display options.

The 7.0-inch model runs on a 1.2GHz dual-core TI OMAP4460 processor whereas the 8.9-inch model runs on the 1.5GHz dual-core OMAP4470 processor. Both models come in 16GB and 32GB storage capacities.

The 7.0 and 8.9 versions of the Kindle Fire HD

The 7.0-inch model has a resolution of 1,280 x 800 whereas the 8.9-inch model has a resolution of 1,920 x 1200, which gives it an amazing 254 ppi pixel density, just short of the 264 ppi on the new iPad’s Retina display. The display on the Kindle Fire HD also offers 25% less glare and full spectrum color at all angles.

More info about the screen

Kindle Fire HD also comes with stereo speakers plus exclusive Dolby Digital Plus audio engine for excellent audio output. There is dual-band (two antennas) Wi-Fi on board as well.

Some of the new features

The new features already introduced within the Kindle Paperwhite for the ebook reader will be here too. But here will be even more – like the X-Ray for movies (IMDB-powered). You can touch on some of the actors while watching a movie and see their names and bios.

More features

You can now sync game saves with the Whispersync so you can continue playing where you left off regardless of the device. Whispersync can also be used to save your progress on an audiobook and resume on the exact second you’ve left listening. You can even continue reading the real e-book where you ended listening to the audiobook and vice versa. Naturally, this feature uses the cloud to store your game saves and book listening.

Also unveiled a special mode for children giving them access to safe-only content. It’s called Kindle FreeTime and it allows parents to create profiles for their children. When activated, they basically make only certain content available and the availability can also be time limited making “negotations with kids” a bit easier.

A few new apps will come in help too – Facebook, Skype (video-chats will be possible thanks to the front-facing HD camera) and updated email client.

The 7-inch Kindle Fire HD will launch on September 14 for $199 (16GB) and $249 (32GB), while the 8.9-inch model will become available on September 20 for $299 (16GB) and $369 (32GB).

Amazon will also offer a 4G LTE version of the tablet with 32GB and 64GB internal storage for $449 and $599 respectively and they will be available starting November 20. You must pay for Amazon’s 4G LTE Package, though, which costs $49.99 per year and includes 250MB monthly data traffic, 20GB of cloud storage and $10 of Amazon credit. Nice!

Fujifilm announces XF1 point and shoot camera

Fujifilm announces XF1 point and shoot camera

Fujifilm has announced the new XF1 point and shoot camera with a stunning retro design built to fit in your pocket. The XF1 is built from aluminum and synthetic leather that Fujifilm says reproduces the feel of genuine leather.

On the front you have a 25-100mm, f/1.8 FUJINON lens with a zoom ring. The camera is activated by turning the zoom ring and when not in use you can push the ring inside the camera to make it even smaller.

Inside there is a 12 megapixel, 2/3-inch EXR-CMOS sensor, which is fairly large for a camera of this size. The XF1 can also record 1080p videos. On the back is a 3.0-inch, 460k dot display with tempered glass for scratch resistance.

The Fujifilm XF1 goes on sale next month for $499.99 and will be sold in red, black and tan colors.

Windows Phone 8 emulator confirms rumored built-in screenshot feature

Windows Phone 8 emulator confirms rumored built-in screenshot feature

Many people were unhappy with the Windows Phone 7 lack of native screenshot capture support. It wasn’t the WP7’s deal breaker, but still it was a feature the competition was offering for quite some time.

It seems Microsoft took the complaints seriously and Windows Phone 8 has native support for taking screenshots.

The Windows Phone 8 emulator confirmed we will be able to take screenshots on the new Window Phones. It’s done by pressing the Start and the Camera keys, just as rumored (F2 and F7 in the emulator).

The shots are saved in a dedicated Screenshots folder in the Picture Hub.

We, as reviewers, are really happy to see this feature implemented into the WP8. We are sure developers would also appreciate it. But what about you, the regular users?

Battery test for the Sony Xperia acro S is complete

Battery test for the Sony Xperia acro S is complete, here are the results

The Sony Xperia acro S is a rugged dual-core droid with an IP57 certification, but how tough is its battery? It has a capacity of 1910mAh, which is certainly not bad for a phone with a 4.3″ screen.

With the extra durability the acro S offers, you might be tempted to take it outside the safe confines of the city and go hiking in the woods. Will the battery last you long enough to call for help if anything goes wrong?

Well, we measured the talk time at 7 hours and 9 minutes, which exactly matches the official specs. It’s not the best result we’ve seen, but it does better than most of its Xperia siblings.

In the end, the Sony Xperia acro S lasts just over 36 hours before you’d need to charge it. This is if you do an hour of calls on a 3G network, watch video for an hour and then browse the web for another hour every 24 hours.

The battery life of the Xperia acro S is average, even though we expected a bit more from the relatively big battery (it’s one of the biggest batteries Sony has put in their phones).

AMD unleashed the HD5970 beast - the world's fastest video card

AMD unleashed the HD5970 beast - the world's fastest video card

AMD seems to be on the right track with their HD5xxx series, since their cards become just faster and faster and there’s no stopping them. A few days ago, their latest crop – the Radeon HD5970 – made its way to the retail stores and awaits you there with a pricetag of $600.

The HD5970 has two separate Cypress cores with 1GB GDDR5 memory each. The engine clock goes up to 725 MHz (the HD5870 one is 850 MHz), while memory runs at 1000 MHz. And it has full hardware support for DirectX 11.

Looking at the specs table made by tomshardware.com you can see that the new HD5970 is exactly twice the HD5850 was (even price-wise). But prepare for a huge power drown – at full throttle the HD5970 uses 300W and combined with the board power reaches a bit under 400W. If you want Crossfire with two of these 1 kW power supply is the minimum requirement for you… plus a bag full of cash.

In most of the benchmark tests made by tomshardware.com, the HD5970 show almost similar performance with a Crossfire configuration of 2x HD5870 and outperforms all NVIDIA contenders.

ASUS might showcase its Intel powered 7-inch Fonepad tablet at MWC

ASUS might showcase its Intel powered 7-inch Fonepad tablet at MWC

7-inch Intel-based tablet was expected to be a part of the Asus CES campaign, but for one reason or another it missed the US show. However, Asus has not given up on it and it might be showcasing it at the upcoming MWC in Barcelona.

The tablet has a model designation ME371MG will be Asus Fonepad, according to a POSTEL database. Another leak, this time from the internal system of an online retailer points to a price tag of 7,900 Thai baht (about $265). Before the database entry was taken down, the product page revealed that the slate will be available in two different color variants.

Asus Fonepad, which is expected to be showcased at the end of the month is said to feature a 7″ IPS display, 1.2 GHz Atom Z2420 processor along with 1 GB of RAM, 8 or 16 GB inbuilt memory and well-geared connectivity. The tablet will come with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean out of box.

Furthermore, the name suggests that the device might have the ability to make voice calls, but there is no confirmation of that just yet.

Google adds Instant previews to mobile search for Android and iOS

Google adds Instant previews to mobile search for Android and iOS, makes it look really cool

The Google dev team has just come up with another cool feature for the mobile version of their search engine. You have probably been using instant previews on your desktop computer for some time now, but you can now try them on your mobile browser.

Of course, a few changes were necessary to make the whole thing touch-friendly so Google added an extra screen. You need to press the small magnifier icon on the right side of your screen and you get thumbnail previews of all your results that can be browsed with swipe gestures.

Its really helpful and fun to use so I suggest you try it out right now. The only problem is that you will need an Android 2.2+ or iOS 4.0+ device to do so.

Wi-Fi version of Motorola Xoom to cost $539 in the US

Wi-Fi version of Motorola Xoom to cost $539 in the US, pre-orders start in Europe

Somebody spotted a Wi-Fi version of the Motorola Xoom at a US store. The tablet is listed with a retail price of $539, which is a lot less than the CDMA variety available at Verizon.

Meanwhile in Europe the Motorola Xoom showed up in its entire connectivity-full suite in the UK and Germany.

You may recall our previous article on the Xoom hitting Europe via pre-orders in the UK.

The 3G+Wi-Fi version of the Xoom is priced at £599.99 in The Carphone Warehouse for the UK and 699.95 in Germany, courtesy of Amazon. Mind you both are SIM-free offers with pre-order prices. Amazon doesn’t specify a date for delivery and The Carphone Warehouse states early April.

The Motorola Xoom is one of the hottest slates out there on the market, even after the iPad 2 was announced a couple of days ago. The Xoom comes with the tablet-oriented Android 3.0 Honeycomb, dual-core processing power and HD video prowess.

More pictures of Motorola DROID 3 surface

More pictures of Motorola DROID 3 surface, we get to see the keyboard this time

A few days ago I showed you a bunch of new DROIDs coming on the way. One of them was the Motorola DROID 3. There are two new pictures today and we get to see its five-row keyboard.

There is still no information on the specs, but what we know so far is the DROID 3 will pack a five-row sliding-out QWERTY keyboard, an HDMI port and a 4-inch capacitive display of 960×540 pixel resolution and most probably Android 2.3 will tick inside. Another thing is it will be for Verizon US network, so it’s a CDMA phone.

I hope we are not far away from the official announcement.
