Dell Vostro V13 laptop is only 16

Dell Vostro V13 laptop is only 16.5mm thick, costs a quarter of Dell Adamo XPS

If you’re suffering from Apple MacBook Air or Dell Adamo XPS cravings this just might be your lucky day. Meet the Dell Vostro V13 – it’s a 16.5mm thick 13-incher that brings very much the same specs as the Dell Adamo XPS, but at a netbook-scale price.

Okay, I’ll admit that the XPS 9.9mm thickness for a laptop sounds (and looks) amazing – it can even put most smartphones to shame. But the price is just too hard to swallow. The Dell Vostro V13 on the other hand is actually reasonably priced… though it’s only available in Singapore right now. Which isn’t a big deal, considering it’s not quite official yet (though it’s up on the Dell Sinagpore website, specs and all).

First off, things are not quite as rosy – 16.5mm is just the thinnest part of the of the Vostro V13, at its thickest it’s 19.7 mm. But that still is only a hair thicker than the MacBook Air. Anyway, let’s see what we get for our money. The Dell Vostro V13 is a 13.3″ laptop with 1366 x 768 pixels resolution (the MacBook Air has 1280 x 800).

For the CPU you have a choice between Intel Core2 Duo SU7300 (1.3GHz, 3MB L2 cache), Intel Core2 Solo SU3500 (1.4GHz, 3MB L2 cache), Intel Celeron 743 (1.2GHz, 1MB L2 cache), all of them of the ultra-low voltage variety (the Adamo XPS has Intel Core2 Duo 1.4GHz ULV CPU).

Dell Vostro V13Dell Vostro V13Dell Vostro V13Dell Vostro V13
A better look at the Dell Vostro V13

So far so good. The Dell Vostro V13 also sports goodies like up to 4GB DDR3 RAM 1066MHz, 802.11n support, gesture-controlled touchpad, 2 USB ports, one of which is a USB/eSATA combo, 34mm ExpressCard, 5-in-1 card reader, 1.3MP webcam.

For the OS, the choice ranges from anything from Ubuntu Linux, through Windows Vista Home Basic to Windows 7 Home Premium or Professional. The graphics are a bit disappointing – Intel GMA 4500MHD. The same holds for the storage memory – there is no SSD option. Not that you can put “SSD” and “cheap” in the same sentance. And obviously you don’t get an aluminum body or the touch-enabled latch that opens the Dell Adamo XPS.

Still, the Dell Vostro V13 price is only 450 US dollars, so the non-aluminum body doesn’t seem like such a loss. That price will probably be valid only for the Intel Celeron Ubuntu OS version. Since the Vostro V13 is still not announced properly, the price situation is a little unclear.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 trailer is out

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 trailer is out, promises some epic stuff

As you should well know, the last Harry Potter movie was split into two parts, because the seventh book turned out impossible to fit into a two-hour movie. The first part of the Deathly Hallows premiered last November and it was really good and the script was very close to the book.

Today the Deathly Hallows Part 2 trailer was released and it looks epic. Let’s hope the movie keeps that spirit.

I personally like the books but I’m not such a fan of the movies. In my opinion the Half-Blood Prince was a disaster – it was a good and a beautiful movie, but it was very far away from the events in the sixth book. I honestly didn’t believe David Yates & Co will give us a decent ending, but the Part 1 of the Deathly Hallows was quite a surprise – it followed and covered almost all events in the book it was based on. And it was an excellent movie too.

The Deathly Hallows Part 2 will hits cinemas on 15 July this year. Would you go watch it?

LG and Sony settle patent dispute with a cross-licensing deal

LG and Sony settle patent dispute with a cross-licensing deal

Sony and LG have finally settled their patent dispute that concerned infringed patents on smartphones, TVs and Blu-ray technology.

The dispute began after a technology sharing agreement expired three years ago and the two companies have exchanged a couple of blows in the US and European courts since then. A complaint was filed by Sony concerning LG smartphones in the US and LG accused Sony of infringing its Blu-ray video technology in the PlayStation 3. LG even got a court injunction in the Netherlands, where PlayStation 3 consoles were seized by customs.

Both companies have now confirmed, however, that the battle is over and that they have signed a cross-licensing agreement that will allow each of them to use the other’s patents. There’s no saying if any money changed hands for the agreement to be reached, though.

Well that’s one patent war down, but there are still many many more to come as the technological world currently seems to be in a full blown patent war.

Chrome for Android will likely remain Flash-less forever

Chrome for Android will likely remain Flash-less forever

Limited availability aside, the Chrome beta launch went as smooth as Google could have possibly hoped. Everyone who got a chance to take the new Android browser for a spin loved it and for a good reason. The Chrome beta is smooth, offers a cool UI and plenty of eye-candy and seemed to have the stock browser in its pocket.

And then you notice that it’s lacking Flash support. But hey, the stock ICS browser also missed Flash at launch and got it later, right? As it turns out, Chrome for Android won’t be as lucky and it will most likely remain without Flash support forever.

The problem is that the mobile-friendly Chrome arrives too late – it comes after Adobe announced the discontinued development of its Flash player for mobile devices. The developing company will only release security and bugfixes from now on and won’t bother creating a plug-in for the Chrome browser.

And while it’s true that Chrome scores the highest of any mobile browser on the html5test.com benchmark, the web is still a long way from moving completely to HTML5 and Flash is still a pretty major part of it.

Normally, the lack of Flash support wouldn’t be a big problem for a browser as cool as Chrome, but the problem here is it faces a really strong rival in the face of the stock ICS browser. The stock browser from the latest Android release is impressively smooth too and offers the innovative quick controls interface plus a ton of other extras.

As it turns out choosing between the two is a matter of picking your priorities – great syncing with your desktop Chrome browser vs Flash support and for some this might not be as easy a choice as Google might have hoped.

Google turns 14 - Happy Birthday

Google turns 14 - Happy Birthday!

14 years ago a small but effective search engine came to prominence on the domain www.google.com. The rest is history.

Today marks the 14th year of existence for the tech giant, and it’s celebrating with one of its trademark homepage doodles.

Google was first envisioned by Standford students Larry Page and Sergey Brin as part of a research project which attempted to catalog a web page by the number of pages that backlink to it. The result was the PageRank system, which coincidentally provided much more accurate search results than those of commercial search portals at the time, such as Yahoo! or Excite.com.

Google later went on to offer its IPO in 2004, just after reaching its peak in terms of search engine dominance, at which time it accounted for just under 85% of all searches made on the internet.

Today, Google remains one of the most successful tech companies in history, and stands firmly by its declaration to be “a company that does good things for the world even if we forgo some short term gains.”

So, from us at GSMArena.com, happy birthday Google! Thanks for making the internet a better place!

Check out our source link from some previous Google birthday doodles.

Twitter got hacked by the Iranian Cyber Army

Twitter got hacked by the Iranian Cyber Army, presumably nothing stolen

A day ago the social network Twitter was hacked by a group called “Iranian Cyber Army”. There is no harm done to the servers and databases, the attack just compromised the DNS records and redirected to a new web site, instead of Twitter.

Twitter claim nothing is stolen and I believe they’re straight with us. But if the hackers really meant some harm, they might have managed to design a false Twitter page before unveiling the attack. This would have allowed them to easily steal a lot of accounts with passwords.

So just to be sure, you may want to change your password.

A breakdown of Facebook's expected $100 billion worth once it goes public [INFOGRAPHIC]

A breakdown of Facebook's expected $100 billion worth once it goes public [INFOGRAPHIC]

Facebook is pretty popular, ‘pretty’ possibly being the understatement of the century, but did you know that in fact 1 in 10 people use Facebook and that combined, that makes 800 million users worldwide?

Facebook IPO Infogrpahic

With that much activity, Facebook Inc. have made themselves a pretty sizable audience for advertisers to address, but with talks of the company going public, just how much did you expect it was actually worth?

A team of business types over at Accounting Degree Online, have looked into the rumors and whispers surrounding Facebook’s possible move to go public. Amidst their research, they came up with a host of interesting figures, including one very special one.

The analysts have estimated that Facebook’s IPO (Initial Public Offering) could be somewhere in the region of $100 billion. To see just how they came to such a staggering figure, check out the infographic below.

Facebook IPO Infogrpahic full

Based on what we see here, Facebook’s IPO will be the largest in tech company history, six times greater than Google’s for example.

So to clarify, Facebook intend to raise $10 billion by April or June through increased revenue generated by advertising, Facebook fan pages and display ads, in order to push the public value to that magic $100 billion goal, phew!

That’s more than Disney ($61 billion), Amazon ($88.3 billion) and even McDonald’s ($95.6 billion). What’s more, if that $100 billion target is reached, Mark Zuckerberg will pocket a cool $25 billion all for himself, not bad Mark, not bad.

Whilst we’re on the subject, we hit 100,000 ‘Likes’ on our own Facebook page last year thanks to many of our great readers and we’re close approaching the 150,000 mark already. If you want us to inform you of all our latest and greatest via Facebook, head on over to our page now and click that ‘Like’ button.

Facebook introduces VoIP calling for iPhone users in the US

Facebook introduces VoIP calling for iPhone users in the US

After announcing the new Graph Search feature yesterday, Facebook has rolled out yet another important feature, the ability to make voice calls from the mobile app to any of your friends.

Currently, this feature only works on the iOS version of Facebook’s mobile app and only within the US. There is no need to update the app to get this feature. To initiate a call, you have to go through the slightly convoluted process of going to the person’s account, starting a chat with them, then clicking the ‘i’ button in the top right corner and then clicking on the ‘Free call’ option.

According to The Verge, the voice quality over data was quite good and on par with other services such as Skype, Viber, etc. The app shows a push notification when you receive a call.

No word yet on when this functionality will be enabled on other platforms and in other regions.

Certain Verizon iPad 2 being recalled

Certain Verizon iPad 2 being recalled, duplicate MEIDs are the culprit

Few days back there were reports of certain iPad 2 that were shipped to users being recalled by Apple before they reached their owners. At that time Apple did not give any reason for this behaviour but now it seems we have the answer.

The reason for the recall is due to duplicate MEIDs on certain iPad 2 and this is restricted to the Verizon iPads. A MEID or Mobile Equipment Identifier is a unique number of every CDMA device. If more than one device is using the same number, then the device would fail to work with the network, which is also what happened to some of those who did receive their iPad 2.

Apple is now recalling those faulty iPad 2 and replacing them with new ones. If yours is one of them then you should visit your nearest Apple Store right now. As a gesture of apology, Apple will also offer you $50 credit or iPad accessories when you return your faulty iPad 2.

Xbox 360 Metro-fied Dashboard gets leaked on video

Xbox 360 Metro-fied Dashboard gets leaked on video, coming to your console this fall

We have seen screenshots of the redesigned Xbox 360 dashboard before that uses the slick new Metro UI but now a video has leaked that gives us a nice little tour of the interface and all the various menu options that we can expect to see when the update is released this fall.

The video is low resolution and a bit blurry. Moreover there is no audio and the text is all in French so it’s basically like watching a French movie with no audio and subtitles. You still get a good look at the UI, including the new Bing search bar. Unfortunately, there is no web browser built-in and you are limited to searching content for Xbox. Everything else seems the same as what we have now, just in a different looking interface.

You can check it out for yourself in the video below.

Barnes & Noble adds Google Play Store support to NOOK HD and NOOK HD+

Barnes & Noble adds Google Play Store support to NOOK HD and NOOK HD+

Barnes & Noble have announced that they will be adding support for the Google Play Store on their NOOK HD and NOOK HD+ Android tablets. So far these devices have been restricted to downloading content only from Barnes & Noble’s content store but are now open to the entire Google catalog as well.

Along with the 700,000 apps and games, NOOK HD and NOOK HD+ users will also be able to access music, movies, books and magazines from the Play Store. Other than that, Barnes & Noble is also adding the Google Chrome browser and Google services such as Gmail, Google Maps, YouTube and Google Search.

These changes will be introduced to existing NOOK HD and NOOK HD+ through a software update and new devices will ship with them pre-installed. This should make these devices a lot more attractive to potential buyers who may have held off so long due to a lack of quality content on these tablets.

Max Payne for mobile devices is on the way

Max Payne for mobile devices is on the way, Rockstar confirms

Rockstar keeps delivering great news to gamers around the planet today. First it was the new trailer of the upcoming Max Payne 3 and now the game studio confirms that the original Max Payne game will hit iOS and Android devices “very soon”.

The news came from a Q&A session hosted on the Rockstar website, where a fan asked whether Max Payne will be ported for mobile devices and Rockstar responded “Yes, it’s on its way”.

This isn’t going to be the first time Rockstar launches its older game titles on mobile platforms. In fact it’s quite understandable that after the successful release of Grand Theft Auto III, Max Payne is on his way.

Rockstar says they are preparing an official announcement, which should answer the rest of our questions. Here’s hoping it takes place in the following weeks.

128GB Apple iPad with Retina Display is now official

128GB Apple iPad with Retina Display is now official

Apple has just made the 128GB edition of the iPad with Retina Display official.

The fourth-gen Apple tablet will not replace any of the already established storage capacity options of the slate, and will be sold alongside them. Safe for the increased storage, the inwards of the latest version of the iPad 4 remains virtually the same with the Apple A6X chip, Bluetooth 4.0 and FaceTime HD camera.

With the 128GB storage capacity option now a fact, we are hoping Apple will drop the 16GB model of the iPad and leave the 32GB variety as base come the next refresh of the tablet lineup. The Cupertino company already did that with the iPhone, which now is offered wtih 16GB storage as minimum, not 8GB as it used to.

The 128GB iPad with Retina Display will go on sale on February 5 and follows the usual Apple pricing scheme adding $100 more on top of the 64GB model. The 128GB Wi-Fi version of the iPad will retail for $799, while the Wi-Fi + LTE version will be going for $929. Pricing of the 16GB, 32GB and 64GB iPad remains unchanged at $499, $599 and $699 for the Wi-Fi model, respectively.

Greenpois0n is out

Greenpois0n is out, jailbreaks iOS 4.1 even better

The greenpois0n jailbreak is now available and does its magic to every iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPad and 3rd and 4th generation iPod Touch. It implements the GeoHot’s exploit used in his limera1n jailbreak tool that was released this weekend.

The limera1n jailbreak was released only a few hours before the promised premiere of greenpois0n. That was the reason for its delay – the Chronic Dev Team that’s behind greenpois0n didn’t want to reveal its exploit to Apple and saved it for the next time.

The Chronic Dev Team implemented the limera1n exploit in the greenpois0n tool instead and it’s now available for public consumption. They claim greenpois0n is safer and more user-friendly, than the limera1n.

It’s compatible with Windows only (a Mac version is coming) and jailbreaks successfully iOS 4.1 on each and every iGadget.

Be aware that this won’t unlock your iPhone and for now, you should stay away from it if you already rely on hacking tools to get a carrier unlock.

You can get the greenpois0n from here.

BlackBerry Q5 battery life tests complete

BlackBerry Q5 battery life tests complete, here are the results

The BlackBerry Q5 is a business phone, meaning no matter what it has to have charge left over or you could miss all sorts of important calls and messages. The BlackBerry Z10 wasn’t bad with a 46 hours endurance score (but then it only has a 1,800mAh battery), then the Q10 beat it with a 56 hours score (but it does have a bigger 2,100mAh battery and smaller screen).

The Q5 has a 2,180mAh battery, same size screen as the Q10 (but LCD instead of AMOLED) and a lower clocked chipset. How did it do?

The talk time was a respectable 14 and half hours, well ahead of the 8 short hours provided by the Z10 but behind the 20 hours of the Q10. What’s the difference between Q5 and Q10 when the batteries are practically the same and the screen is off? Different modem that’s what C some Q10 models have CDMA connectivity so BlackBerry must have used a different modem.

In the end, the lower talk time and not quite as efficient standby lead to an endurance rating of 55 hours for the BlackBerry Q5, an hour short of what the Q10 managed. You can read more about how we do battery tests here.

In the end, 14 hours is more than a human being can manage in a single day, so the Q5 will handle all your business calls. If you do less talking, you can even browse the web for hours and you’d still have enough juice left when you come home.

Snapseed photo sharing and editing app lands in the Google Play store

The award-winning photo sharing and editing application Snapseed has made its way to the Google Play store. The already wildly popular for iOS app also dropped its price from $4.99 to free for all Apple products.

Along with the usual plethora of visual effects, Snapseed allows you to crop images, adjust their brightness and contrast, as well as easily share the final results in Google+ thorough a neatly integrated button. The latter is a direct result from Google’s recent acquisition of Nik Software – the developer behind Snapseed.

You may download Snapseed on your Android device by hitting the source link below. Feel free to share your impressions by dropping us a line in the comments section.

Nokia demoes C7's NFC prowess with an exclusive Angry Birds Magic game

Nokia demoes C7's NFC prowess with an exclusive Angry Birds Magic game

Nokia is showcasing the NFC capabilities of its C7 Symbian device using an NFC version of the widely popular Angry Birds game, dubbed Magic. This all goes down at the MeeGo conference in San Francisco. The purpose of the game is to find someone with a C7 smartphone and using the NFC chip inside to unlock levels, after you’re done with the previous ones.

You get 5 levels of Angry Birds after which you will need to unlock the next five by pairing two C7 units together. It’s a clever idea, I have to admit.

The NFC-enabled Angry Birds Magic will be preinstalled on new C7 devices carrying the new Symbian Anna OS.

A thought comes to mind though. Exactly how many strangers around you will actually have a C7 smartphone on them and wouldn’t it be kind of weird to go asking them to poke your own C7 in order to unlock some levels of a game they may have never heard of? Care to share on opinion? The comments section is open for debate.

Here’s a video by Rovio, the company behind the Angry Birds franchise, on the matter. Enjoy!

Sony announces a wide range of new mobile accessories for its Xperia smartphones

Sony announces a wide range of new mobile accessories for its Xperia smartphones

Sony’s IFA 2013 press event concluded just a while ago and as expected, the company announced the Xperia Z1, its latest flagship smartphone. The announcement also saw the unveiling of the QX lens-style cameras and a wide range of high-tech accessories.

The list of notable accessories includes the Smart Imaging Stand, Smartphone Tripod and the SmartTags. There is also an enhanced magnetic charging dock, Bluetooth music receiver, Wireless headset and a smart Bluetooth handset.

Smart Imaging Stand

The Smart imaging stand is an impressive accessory that has the ability to tilt and rotate in 360 degrees to keep the subject in focus. The imaging stand can be controlled by a smartphone via Bluetooth and you can also pair or connect using one-touch NFC.

The Smart Stand also comes with a built-in SmileCatcher app that captures images whenever someone smiles. The accessory, which is powered by a two AA batteries, has a host of other apps too and the experimental Motion API is now available for developers.

Smartphone Tripod

The Smartphone Tripod is another camera accessory that was unveiled. The tripod measures 57 x 171 x 55mm and weighs about 80g. With the portable tripod, you can mount your Xperia Z1 or any other Xperia smartphone to get extra stability while capture images or videos. The add-on will be available in black color option and is expected to hit the stores in the coming days.

SmartTags

These are another cool bunch of high-tech tags that gives you a unique experience while sharing things with your friend via NFC. These are much smaller than before and work with the Smart Connect android app.

Bluetooth Music Receiver

We have seen several Bluetooth Music Receivers in the past, but this one is designed exclusively with Sony Xperia smartphones in mind. With the receiver, you can continuously stream music audio to your home systems directly from your Xperia smartphone.

Wireless Headset

These high-quality NFC-enabled headphones come with Bluetooth 3.0 and multipoint connectivity. The DR-BTN200M headsets give you the ability to answer, end calls, play/pause music, jump between tracks and manage your volume levels.

Smart Bluetooth Handset

The handset is a splash proof wireless audio accessory, which allows you to listen or talk without having to take your smartphone out. The smart handset comes with Bluetooth 3.0, NFC, multipoint connectivity, FM radio with RDS, Android app enables, HD Voice ready and gives you the control over your smartphone wirelessly.

Unfortunately, there is no word on the pricing details of these cool accessories. You can also check out the source link below for a heap of other add-ons for your Xperia smartphone.

Microsoft Surface to launch along with Windows 8 on October 26

Microsoft Surface to launch along with Windows 8 on October 26

Microsoft has revealed in its annual report filed this week that the anticipated Windows 8 based Surface tablet will be released along with the operating system on October 26.

So far we only knew that the tablet would go on sale sometime after the launch of the OS but it’s good to know that the tablet will also be releasing on the same day.

In case you are not aware, the Surface is Microsoft’s upcoming tablet designed completely in-house by Microsoft. There will be two versions of it, the Surface, running Windows RT on an ARM-based NVIDIA Tegra processor and the Surface Pro, running Windows 8 on an Intel Ivy Bridge processor. The Surface has a 10.1-inch HD display, whereas the Surface Pro ups the resolution to FullHD. The tablet has an molded magnesium casing called VaporMg with an integrated kickstand. Microsoft will also be providing a unique soft cover for the tablet that has built-in capacitive keyboard and trackpad.

No price information is known at the moment but it is speculated that the base Surface will start at $499, same as the new iPad.

HTC J butterfly promo video is out

HTC J butterfly promo video is out, shows off the 1080p screen

The promo video for the freshly announced, Full HD display-packing HTC J butterfly has been released. Naturally, the short video clip is focused on the handset’s design and hardware highlights, with the 5″ 1080p getting the most attention.

It is needless to say that we are quite jealous that this monster of a smartphone is exclusive for the Japanese carrier AU/KDDI for the time being. We are however, more than certain that we will see its brand new, stunning Super LCD3 display, as well as its new internals make their way to more HTC devices in the nearest future.

Here goes the video itself.

Google's Photovine becomes publicly available

Google's Photovine becomes publicly available, let the sharing begin

Unlike some other Google projects, which seem to spend an eternity in the beta stages of their development, it only took Photovine a little over a month to graduate. The ambitious photo-sharing service is now accessible for everyone.

And by everyone, I mean only those who have an iOS device, as Photovine is currently only available as an app in the App Store. At least it covers the lot with iPhone, iPod touch and iPad units running iOS 4.2 or later being supported.

So if you feel like becoming a part of a social network that revolves around photo sharing, now is your chance. Just head to the App Store to download the app and start growing those vines.

Apple iPad 2 arrives in UK on the 25th from Orange and T-Mobile

Apple iPad 2 arrives in UK on the 25th from Orange and T-Mobile

It’s hardly surprising that the iPad 2 is already scheduled for launch in the UK. UK is in the second wave scheduled for 25 March following the US launch on 11 March.

For now, only T-Mobile and Orange have officially come up and confirmed they are selling it but we guess more carriers will join in.

The new iPad 2 is a worthy successor to the original, bringing dual-core processing and better, faster graphics. Not to mention that thin body and cool Smart Cover make it a desirable product in many hearts.

Specific information isn’t given yet on pricing and pre-orders, though. So future UK owners of the device will just have to wait it out and be on the lookout for further news.

In the same time, the prices of the first-gen iPad have already been slashed, you can check them out.

Four by four: Quad-core Android smartphones royal rumble

Four by four: Quad-core Android smartphones royal rumble

Welcome to the age of the quad-core Android behemoths! As it happens, there are currently just four of them in existence and we have all of them in our office ready to flex some multi-core muscle.

The smartphones in question, as most of you probably know, are the Samsung Galaxy S III, HTC One X, Meizu MX 4-core and the LG Optimus 4X HD. They all have some serious processing power from Samsung and Nvidia at their hearts, using the Exynos 4 quad and Tegra 3 chipsets. But which one is the best? That’s what we are going to find out soon, but until the complete shootout is ready we thought we might give you a teaser and give you an idea of what to expect.

What you are looking at is the Android elite. The Samsung Galaxy S III and the Meizu MX 4-core are powered by the same Exynos 4212 Quad chipset with four Cortex A9 cores clocked at 1.4GHz. On the other side we have the LG Optimus 4X HD and the HTC One X – both running Nvidia’s Tegra 3 chipset which rocks another four cores of the same type, but operating at 1.5GHz.

So, the game is set. The only rule is that there are no rules. This is not about battery life, weight or size. Whoever packs most grunt inside it is the winner.

We are going to test the four quad beasts in different benchmarks categories. Their CPU, GPU and the RAM will be put to various tests. Then, we’ll compare the results. Here’s a flavor of what you can expect when we publish our full review next week.

BenchmarkPi and Linpack are CPU-stressing tests. They’ll give us of how the quadruplet of cores inside each of the contestants is faring.

Linpack

Higher is better

  • Meizu MX 4-core
    189.1
  • Samsung Galaxy S III
    177.1
  • LG Optimus 4X
    141.5
  • HTC One X (Tegra 3)

BenchmarkPi

  • LG Optimus 4X
    350
  • Meizu MX 4-core
    362

NenaMark 2 and gives the GPU of the phones a pretty good workout. The results of those test will show how a device handles games and where is its limit.

NenaMark 2

Higher is better

  • Samsung Galaxy S III
    58.8
  • Meizu MX 4-core
    54.1
  • LG Optimus 4X

  • HTC One X (Tegra 3)
    47.5

BrowserMark and SunSpider test HTML and JavaScript performance of the web browser. The higher a phone ranks here, the the better browsing experience you’ll get from it.

SunSpider

Lower is better

  • Samsung Galaxy S III

  • Meizu MX 4-core
    1458
  • HTC One X (Tegra 3)

  • LG Optimus 4X
    134, 036
  • HTC One X (Tegra 3)

So that’s that for now, but there’s plenty more to come. We’ll be making the elite company here jump through all kinds of hoops and we’ll be back with the results soon, so stay tuned.

Galaxy Tab 10

Galaxy Tab 10.1N gets unboxed, previewed, benchmarked, compared and very nearly reviewed on video

Samsung’s Made for Germany Galaxy Tab 10.1N will soon be hitting the German shelves. But before that we have a video for you of the device getting a thorough rundown in a typical Teutonic fashion.

In the video below by NewGadgets.de, we can see the new Galaxy Tab 10.1N first getting unboxed. After spending some time explaining the new design the video moves on to the software and the performance of the device in gaming and web browsing. From there it moves on to benchmarking and finally end it with a comparison with rival tablets.

As you can see the device looks nearly identical to the regular 10.1. The backside, which we are seeing for the first time, is exactly the same. Same goes for the software and everything else about the device. But Samsung seems confident that this should be enough to keep them out of legal troubles for a while, at least. This also means that Germans who have been waiting to get the device can do so now officially.

Barnes and Noble launches the Android-running NOOKcolor eBook reader

Barnes and Noble launches the Android-running NOOKcolor eBook reader, sells for 249 US dollars

Barnes and Noble has just unveiled its latest eBook reader, the NOOKcolor. It packs a 7-inch color touchscreen, offers Wi-Fi connectivity and runs Android. It’s so much more than a traditional eBook reader.

So, the E-Ink display is now gone, replaced by the 16M-color 1024-by-600-pixel IPS touchscreen with multi-touch support (read “pinch-to-zoom”) and viewing angles reaching the impressive 178 degrees. The NOOKcolor comes with 8GB of onboard storage for up to 6000 eBooks (there are over 2 million compatible eBooks) and there is also a microSD memory card slot ready to accommodate cards with up to 32GB of memory.

The newly announced NOOKcolor can also be used for web browsing (over Wi-Fi – there is no support for 3G) or as a portable media player. It features a built-in mono speaker, a standard 3.5mm audio jack and plays MP3 and AAC audio files as well as videos in MP4 format.

The NOOKcolor also displays files in EPUB, PDF, TXT, DOC, DOCX, XLS, PPT, JPG, formats (keep in mind, though, that LIT, AMZ, LRZ, LRX files are not supported).

The NOOKcolor lets you listen to the Pandora internet radio, play some games (Chess, Sudoku, Crossword Puzzles) and, according to the manufacturer, will stay awake for up to 8 hours (with Wi-Fi switched off) before you have to recharge its battery.

By the way, even if the NOOKcolor is based on the Android platform, it has no access to the Android Market so you have to rely on the B&N’s own app store.

The NOOKcolor is now on pre-order in the US (for 249 US dollars, which is 100 bucks more than the previous Wi-Fi-only model) and will start shipping on 19 November 2010.

The base model can be had for around 450 ($563), but offers a rather lowly 1.4Ghz Celeron processor. If you want some Sandy Bridge magic, you’ll have to fork over 560 (around $700) for the version with a 1.5Ghz Core i3-2377M processor.

All of the B113 variants feature the aforementioned RAM, storage and dispaly, as well as Wi-Fi a/b/g/n, USB 3.0, HDMI and a 4400mAh battery, as well as a special matte coating on the screen designed to reduce glare.

Purported images of iPad 3 shell surface

Purported images of iPad 3 shell surface, said to contain a bigger battery, different display and different cameras

The next generation iPad is nearing its launch and so the rumor mills are now in full force. What we have today, though, is not a rumor but a purported photograph of the aluminum shell of the next generation iPad (which I will refer to as the iPad 3 for now).

What you see above is the aforementioned photograph, with the iPad 3 shell on the right. The photograph was uncovered by RepairLabs, who noticed that the new shell has different mounts for the logic board, which suggests a redesigned logic board, most probably to accommodate a larger battery. They also said that the shell did not look noticeably thicker than the iPad 2′s, which is contrary to current rumors that suggested that the iPad 3 will be slightly thicker.

Next they noticed that the camera seemed a bit different on the iPad 3 compared to the one on the iPad 2. Considering the fact the camera on the iPad 2 was quite lame when it came to still images, it’s likely that Apple would beef it up in the next version. Perhaps we would see auto-focus being included, along with a new back-lit sensor and 1080p video recording.

Lastly, they noticed that the mounting for the LCD is different, which means Apple will be using a different display. This does not necessarily mean that it will be a Retina display, but that does seem to be the most likely explanation.

As usual, we would suggest you take this information with a pinch of salt. It’s not uncommon these days to find images tuned expertly in a way that they would align perfectly with the currently circulating rumors, thus making the viewer believe that they might in fact be real. However, it doesn’t seem like it will be long before we find out what the iPad 3 really is like. That is assuming Apple sticks with its March schedule for announcing new iPads.

The HTC EVO 4G better show us some GSM love

The HTC EVO 4G better show us some GSM love

The HTC EVO 4G (a.k.a. Supersonic) is one uber-smartphone. Slim, sleek, powerful and smart. It’s only that it works over CDMA networks only and we don’t have much of those here in Europe. Instead we stick to GSM networks and that’s one of the reasons our primary website is called GSMarena.com. The “Arena” thing was chosen with the old gladiator arenas in mind. We like to think that our website is where various GSM phones meet and clash in a battle for your attention. But I digress…

The thing is – we get a lot of emails from you guys about the HTC EVO 4G. No, we’re not neglecting it on purpose. We certainly don’t have anything against HTC or Android – a quick look over at our homepage will prove that. It’s just that we don’t cover CDMA-only handsets. Simple as that. There’s no covert ploy here and we’re not blind and deaf. We know all about the EVO 4G and we certainly hope HTC will make one for our type of network.

But until then – this post will remain our only scoop the EVO 4G will get from us.

The EVO 4G (or may be you know it as the HTC Supersonic) is like a geek’s dream come true. It packs the zippy 1GHz Snapdragon CPU, a huge 4.3″ capacitive touchscreen, and runs the Android OS v2.1 Eclair with the latest Sense UI on top of it.

The HTC EVO 4G is also the first US phone to feature WiMAX support. It also comes with support for Wi-Fi, stereo Bluetooth and has a secondary camera for videocalls (not many Androids have one). The primary camera sports autofocus, dual LED flash and is capable of taking 8-megapxel images and 720p videos.

And guess what! The EVO 4G has an HDMI port too. And a kickstand! Whew, that boy surely packs some serious gear. But again – until we see some GSM love, it will remain off our homepage and off our database. That’s the way we run things around here – sorry!
